XLETIX Challenge NRW returns to Zeche Ewald in Herten, a decommissioned Ruhr-valley coal mine that has been reclaimed by parkland. The course threads pithead winding towers and industrial concrete together with green meadows and the panoramic viewing platform on the old spoil tip, so you swap heavy industry for open countryside every few kilometres. Signature obstacles include Burning Bridge, Freak Froster and Wild Water, and the mud is guaranteed.
Three courses share the same venue: FUN over 6 km with 15 obstacles for first-timers, ADVENTURE over 12 km with 25 obstacles, and X-TREME over 18 km with 35 obstacles. XLETIX is run in teams rather than in waves against the clock, so nobody is left behind at an obstacle.
