Toughest Sälen is the outlier on the calendar: an 8 km main race staged on the alpine slopes of Kläppen Ski Resort, in the Swedish mountains near the Norwegian border. The course climbs, and keeps climbing. Expect serious vertical, forest singletrack and long descents, with the reward being a summit view most OCR courses cannot offer. If you have only run flat city races, this is the one that will hurt in a new way.
Kläppen runs the race as a full weekend. The main race and the Double Distance add-on (two laps, roughly 16 km) go on the Saturday, with Xplore (4 km, untimed) and Family (2 km) on the Sunday, so a group can split across both days. The resort keeps its gondola, mountain-bike rental, disc golf and hiking trails open around the event, which makes Sälen the easiest Toughest stop to build a two- or three-night trip around rather than a day trip.
Sälen is remote — roughly four hours by car from Stockholm and three from Oslo — so book accommodation at or near the resort early and plan on driving.
